WHO WE ARE

Welcome to Atwater Street Tacos, where tradition meets innovation in the heart of Flat Rock!

Owners Monica and Gerardo, whose shared dream of opening a Mexican restaurant took root in 2012, brought years of restaurant experience to the table. When the opportunity arose to renovate our current location in late 2017, they seized the moment, giving birth to Atwater Street Tacos, named after the historic street it proudly inhabits. Our menu is a fusion of authentic Mexican street food, blending traditional family recipes passed down through G’s parents with Monica and G’s own creative flair, earning acclaim from our loyal customers.

Indulge in the authentic flavors of Mexico at Atwater Street Tacos. HISTORY

Established in 2018, Atwater Street Tacos has a rich history deeply rooted in the Flat Rock community.

Our journey began with a vision to create something extraordinary, blending the charm of historic Flat Rock with the vibrant flavors of Mexican cuisine. In collaboration with the Flat Rock Historic Society and our building owner, Bill Miller, we embarked on a mission to revive the past. The wood used to renovate our building was milled right here in the 1800s, preserving the essence of our location’s heritage. Today, that very wood adorns our tables, providing a unique dining experience.

HISTORIC FLAT ROCK

Our restaurant stands on the historic grounds of the Metler saw mill and flour mill from the 1800s, a once-iconic location that served as a crucial waypoint between Detroit and Toledo.

Across the river, the old Ford building, now the Flat Rock Metal plant, reminds us of the enduring legacy of Ford Motor Company’s support for Flat Rock, where Mustangs have been crafted for over two decades. Many of our neighbors proudly work for Ford, and we celebrate this strong community connection.

On a personal note, Gerardo and Monica share a passion for American motor powersports, regularly participating in car meetups and races centered around their love for Ford vehicles, particularly the iconic Mustangs built right here in Flat Rock.

FOR OUR COMMUNITY

Over the years, we’ve received numerous nominations for “Vote 4 The Best” and have been featured on Live in The D, Under the Radio, and various podcasts.

Atwater Street Tacos has become an integral part of the community, dedicated to supporting local schools and organizations. Our entrepreneurial spirit led Monica and Gerardo to expand their horizons. In April 2021, Station 24 Flat Rock opened its doors, conveniently located just across the street from Atwater Street Tacos. And in June 2019, we launched Atwater Paddles, a kayak rental business sharing the same property. We’re committed to offering diverse experiences for our community.

We take pride in our affiliations with The South East Michigan Chamber of Commerce and the National Restaurant Association, which reflect our commitment to excellence and community engagement.

Atwater Street Tacos is more than just a restaurant;

it’s a celebration of heritage, community, and the joy of savoring delicious, authentic Mexican cuisine.

Join us on this exciting journey, and let us share the flavors and stories that make us who we are.
